The August meeting of BPW Port Moresby recognised the achievements of the girls and women who have received BPW Scholarships and acknowledged the support of the many individuals and organisations who support them through sponsorship, mentoring, training and other activities. Read The National's article "Kemish -Women vital to PNG's development".

Michaela Dion, BPW's vice president (and past president) was recognised for her service to education and to BPW in the New Year's Day honors (2010) in PNG. She was awarded the National Logohu Medal (LM) in May. This is well deserved recognition for a Papua New Guinean woman who works 'under the radar' to change her country and to empower women through education. She is a role model for both young and older PNG women and for her expat colleagues. Congratulations Michaela.

The Women’s Advisory Centre (WAC), an initiative of the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce and Industry (POMCCI) and BPW Port Moresby was launched in April. It is funded by the British High Commission and the Central District (NCD). WAC is situated at the POMCCI and managed by Val Salama (in a volunteer capacity) assisted by Mrs Dia Taru-Bogana who is the Project Services Officer. The Centre offers many services, one of which is information workshops e.g. a half day workshop on micro finance by the National Development Bank.

The Legal Training Institute (LTI) recipient of the BPW Roslyn Anakapu Memorial Award for this year is Sabenu Katurowe. The award was presented to her on 14 April. Sabenu is a student who has achieved success ' against the odds' and was recommended by the leadership of LTI.

The International Women’s Day (IWD) Breakfast was an outstanding success again this year with over 300 people attending. This is BPW Port Moresby's third breakfast and is now our biggest fund raising event on the calendar. The IWD Breakfast attracts PNG businesses and professional groups and we had 7 Gold Sponsors who contributed over K5,000 each and many more entities which purchased a table to support BPW's work. The popular breakfast event is run totally by the volunteer Executive and other volunteer supporters.

IWD celebrated its 100th anniversary this year. Read more on the History of International Women's Day.
